Advocacy at IPIC

Advocacy is more than a mandate—it’s a commitment to fostering a thriving, competitive, and inclusive innovation economy. IPIC serves as the unified voice of Canada’s patent and trademark agents, IP lawyers, and other IP professionals, engaging government, courts, regulators, and international partners to ensure the IP framework keeps pace with technological change and global best practices.

Through thoughtful policy submissions, strategic interventions, and regular dialogue with decision‑makers, we advance balanced legislation that safeguards creators, encourages investment, and promotes fair competition. Our work spans reforms to trademark and patent law, improvements to CIPO operations, and crucial issues such as agent–client privilege, AI and IP, and the reduction of examination backlogs—all with the goal of making Canada a top jurisdiction for protecting and commercializing ideas.

Advocacy at IPIC also reflects our values: equity, diversity, and inclusion guide our positions; evidence‑based research—including our industry‑leading compensation and economic‑impact surveys—shapes our recommendations; and the lived experiences of our 1,900+ members inform every brief, consultation, and court intervention.
