Will Dynamic Site-Blocking Stop Pirated Streams of Live Events?
Tuesday, July 12, 2022, 1 pm - 2 pm ET
Held on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, 1 pm - 2 pm ET
On May 27, 2022, in Rogers Media Inc. v. John Doe 1, 2022 FC 775, the Federal Court allowed a new type of site-blocking order called a “dynamic” site-blocking order which requires internet service providers (ISPs) to block pirated streams of live events. The order does not target a specific site or streaming service but requires Canadian ISPs to block the unauthorized broadcast of live events, no matter the source. This webinar reviews the mechanics and safeguards of the order; the implications of this precedent-setting decision in combatting internet piracy; and considers how future iterations of these orders may be used in regulating the internet.
